Though there are many alternatives for MS Office, no doubt MS Office 2007 is a winner. If you want to install MS 2007 in Linux follow these steps:
[ad]

  1. Install Wine
  2. Select Applications>Wine>Configure Wine to bring the Wine Configuration dialog box.
  3. Select Windows Version as Windows Vista from the Applications Tab
  4. Override two dll files rpcrt4.dll and msxml3.dll from Libraries tab. Override them to be Native (Windows)
  5. Download rpcrt4.dll file. Click here and save it on your desktop.
  6. Open the c_drive from Wine menu
  7. Delete rpcrt4.dll and msxml3.dll files from Windows/System32 directory.
  8. Copy the downloaded rpcrt4.dll file into Windows/System32 directory
  9. Download msxml3.msi file from Microsoft download site (here is the direct link for your convenience).
  10. Install msxml3.msi file from the Terminal window by issuing msiexec /i msxml3.msi
  11. Double click on setup.exe file from your MS Office 2007 installation CD. If it doesn’t work just type wine setup.exe from the Terminal window.
  12. Follow the normal installation procedures.

Watch the step-by-step video:

UPDATE: Before you install Office 2007 don’t forget about winetricks. It might help to resolve many issues. Just go to http://www.kegel.com/wine/winetricks, copy the text (codes) in a file winetrick. From the terminal window type sh winetricks. Check all the msxml stuffs and click install.

I just get the setup crashing unfortunately. It gives me “An error occured during the installation, and setup was unable to complete.” message with a send / don’t send buttons. On Kubuntu fwiw.

2. admin - April 17, 2008

Be sure that you have installed the latest version of wine (install it with sudo apt-get install wine), selected Windows Vista version to emulate, and replaced rpcrt4.dll file. Try with this another rpcrt4.dll

3. ashley - April 17, 2008

Wow – thanks for the quick reply!

I should have mentioned, I did use your .dll and my install of wine is 0.9.59~winehq0~ubuntu~7.10 from the winehq repositories. I did have 0.46 on there before so I made sure to apt remove and rm’d /usr/lib/wine.

Any other thoughts?

4. ashley - April 17, 2008

fwiw:

wine –version
wine-0.9.59

5. Yuki - April 18, 2008

I’ve followed this to the letter and it works great. My only annoyances are that the window borders sit over the top of the windows, so you have to use the “office” button to save etc. and the fonts look kinda funky.

Any ideas on the those?

7. admin - April 18, 2008

@ashley – It should work fine with those. Unless we can analyze the output from your konsole, it is pretty hard to say what’s going wrong.

@Yuki – Try installing MS core fonts with:
sudo apt-get install msttcorefonts

Also, don’t forget to read my another post about managing fonts in Ubuntu.

For the case of borders sitting over the top of windows, I’m also having the same problem and trying to figure it out. If I get any solution, I will post here.

8. Andy - April 18, 2008

Hi —

Thank you for the tutorial; the install worked flawlessly. Unfortunately, I cannot run any of the executables. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance. I’ve posted the error messages below.

Nice,

what is the desktop, theme, and dock program you are using in the video?

10. admin - April 19, 2008
11. admin - April 19, 2008

@Andy – It is an odd case. Try this: Download the msvcr80.dll file and put it inside ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32 directory.

Be sure you have installed the latest version of wine

12. dave - April 19, 2008

I had the same problem as Andy with msvcr80.dll. I installed the DLL and got this error:
fixme:actctx:parse_depend_manifests Could not find dependent assembly L”Microsoft.VC80.CRT”
err:module:attach_process_dlls “MSVCR80.dll” failed to initialize, aborting
err:module:LdrInitializeThunk Main exe initialization for L”C:\\Program Files\\Microsoft Office\\Office12\\WINWORD.EXE” failed, status c0000142

using 0.9.59

Maybe MS Office version matters? what version are you using that works?

13. dave - April 19, 2008

Well just after I post I fix my own problem. Here’s how

I used this script http://www.kegel.com/wine/winetricks
Installed .NET2.0 and all the vbruns. Not sure if all that is needed, probably just one of them. Then it worked great!

By the way in case anyone needs to know to run that script you need to copy the text into a text file, then run sh yourfilethatyoumade

15. ALEX - April 25, 2008

Worked great with the NET 2.0 installation. Thanks.

16. Dan - April 25, 2008

I’ve fixed the earlier problem, seems to be a know issue:

However, now when I come to run msiexec /i msxml.msi I get the following error:

19. Rajat - April 28, 2008

Office 2007 installed properly using the above instructions – Wine 0.9.60. Thank you so much.

But, when I run any of the apps – Work, Excel, Powerpoint, or OneNote, it just CRASHES with the error:
Microsoft Office Word has encountered a problem and needs to close.

Please help. Do I need to have anything else in the libraries to fix it besides msxml3 and rpcrt4 – windows(native)

I really want to get Office 2007 working in Ubuntu 8.04.

Rajat

20. Lasse - April 28, 2008

Hi !

This is such a cool site!

I just have one question about the guide. will you be able to receive updates for the office pack? (or that requires windows update, right?)

Thanks in advance (:

/Lasse

21. sawjew - April 29, 2008

For all those having an issue with the window border covering the buttons; if you are using wine 0.9.60 there is a new feature which you can use to fix this.

Start winecfg, go to the Graphics tab and uncheck the box next to ‘allow the window manager to decorate the windows’. This means that office (and all other windows apps) will have the standard windows borders not the linux borders but it fixes the problem.

If anyone knows of a fix for the bullets and numbering issue I would love to hear it.

I am also having a problem with Word randomly crashing and recovering but it does recover fine.

It seems that 64bit machine is giving all sort of problems. I don’t have any 64bit machine to test the installation so hopefully somebody will come with a solution and would help all of you 64-bit guys. Also please, before installing Office 2007, ensure that you have installed .NET 2.0 as suggested by dave above:

Well just after I post I fix my own problem. Here’s how

I used this script http://www.kegel.com/wine/winetricks

25. Kinst - May 1, 2008

Hey if your program complains about MSVCR80.DLL, it’s because the thing didn’t properly create the /windows/winsxs/ folder. This happens to me when I install as windows vista, as windows XP it goes okay. to fix it you need to copy all the contents of a real winsxs folder into your fake winsxs folder; leave whatevers already in there be. good luck!

26. alittlebitdifferent - May 2, 2008

I am running wine 0.9.60 on a Xandros install on an eeepc.

After following the recommendations when I run setup.exe I get the following error:

err:ntlm:SECUR32_initNTLMSP Usually, you can find it in the winbind package of your distribution.

27. eDs - May 2, 2008

Hi, I’m not sure whats wrong but I followed your tutorial but when I try to install, my setup.exe gives me an error that states:

Setup cannot continue because a required file is either corrumpted ot not available. Try again from teh original source disc or download location.

I am running:
Ubuntu 8.04 x64
Wine 0.59

28. corticalaxon - May 3, 2008

@ Dan and others with the msxml.msi step 10 problem

go into terminal and type

wget http://kegel.com/wine/winetricks and then type

sh winetricks msxml3

(according to Nabble.com)

works to install the msxml3 file. (for me it did)

29. corticalaxon - May 3, 2008

Installed fine, but initially nothing loaded at all. Then I installed msvcr80.dll and now it says there’s a runtime error at C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\WINWORD.EXE

R6034
An Application has made an attempt to tload the C runtime library incorrectly.
Please contact the application’s support team for more information.

30. Maunykah Arcelin - May 3, 2008

Hey there! I have the same exact problem as eDS; whenever I try to load the setup.exe, it tells me that I am missing a required file or that it is corrupted. What should I do?

31. corticalaxon - May 4, 2008

Ok….got to the stage where office shows up under programs in wine, but the first time i cicked word, the initialization screen came up and then an error message occurred that prevented word and all other office apps from opening. this would be the dialog box with the “don’t send” option in the bottom right. I added msvcr80.dll to system32, i set the windows version for wine to vista (which I have dualbooted),I used winetricks to reinstall some of the familiar wine-related packages…I don’t know what to do…complete linux n00b here…

32. eDs - May 4, 2008

Okay I updated my wine, and it got past that issue however, it complains abotu another error. For simplicity I’ve included the wine output when I was trying to install. It appears to say my ntlm_auth is too old or something?

This is fantastic! It worked for me without a hassle. Thnx for rpcrt.dll file. Is this compiled from source or just the version of cxgames? No matter what, thanx for your sweet and quick tweaks

34. Rene - May 6, 2008

Hi

ich also have the Problem that outlook and co dosen´t start

I always get the error
———————–
R6034

an application has made an attempt to load C runtime libary incorrctly…..
———————–

I already install netframework 2.0 and vbruns but the problems stayed the same I also replaced and installed the
rpcrt4.dll and msxml3.dll files (replaced the rpcrt4.ddl and installed the msxml.3)

I also running the latest wine 0.9.60

I would be really thank full if anyone could help because I need to use outlook for my company account and outlook is the only thing why i m running windows on my laptop.

and no I won´t use vmware for that…..

35. dave - May 6, 2008

Upgraded to .61 and it broke. Crashes on startup. Reverted to .59 and it worked again. Also it looks like setting it to XP and making sure gnome manages the window borders makes it more stable.

36. jake - May 7, 2008

Let me start off by saying Great Guide! very useful. Much like Rene it would be great if anyone knows how to get outlook going under wine. here’s a dump of what I’ve encountered when trying to run outlook.

Hi all

error just said
——————————————————————
Microsoft Office Outlook kann nicht gestartet werden.

regards rené

41. srhue - May 16, 2008

Excel and Word work somewhat, buggy though..font changes are hit and miss, moving charts in excel blanks the screen, text boxes don’t work at all, and Powerpoint won’t start…Soooo not so useful yet. This is using Ubuntu 8.04 and Wine 0.9.59. Ohhh…MS 2007 Enterprise Edition.

42. Tyler - May 16, 2008

Im getting the same problem. Im still getting that stupid error report, and im using the Vista, as well as the newest version of WINE. Help? Im using Ubuntu 8.04

43. Ricardo - May 17, 2008

I’m also getting the problem

Setup cannot continue because a required file is either corrumpted ot not available.

Has anyone resolved this?

I’m running Hardy 8.0.4 i686, wine 0.9.59 and followed all the steps. I tried both Vista and XP.

NO LUCK! 😦

44. Ricardo - May 17, 2008

Guys,

I got it to install, finally! 🙂

All I had to do, in winecfg is to make sure in the Libraries tab, to select the 2 libraries to be overriden as native. I had done the copying, but didn’t configure as native.

Now my question is, WHERE do I go to run office?

I don’t see it in Applications, or in the Wine Programs.

45. Tyler - May 17, 2008

This is what happens when i try to install msxml3.dll

Hey there. Sorry if the below makes this a long post. I have tried numerous times following this guide as well as others. I finally got Office 07 installed, however whenever I start Word/Excel it just keeps saying it has encountered an error. Below is the output in the terminal. I even tried using a different rpcrt4.dll, which seemed to work differently, because I would not get the error message, but the program would not load any further. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

Ok. this is the second time this has happened to me. I install office generally flawlessly, except for the fact that msxml3.msi wouldn’t install through terminal so i used winetricks to add it. But, when I finish installation and try to open up a program (e.g. MS Word 2007), nothing happens. And it is listed under “Other” in applications, not under wine. I don’t know if that means problems. But how do I get it to work?

52. donavan - May 25, 2008

I started out using another guide at appdb.winehq.org which seems to be very similar to what this guide is, with the one difference the rpcrt4.dll was given here as a download link.

My setup is thus:
Ubuntu 8.04 running as a guest OS in VMware on a Vista host
Wine 1.0rc1
Office Pro loading from Office Ultimate DVD ISO
I used winetricks to get all the extra stuff

After telling office to only install word and nothing else, I managed to get word to install almost 60% before the program stuck, then sat there for more than a half hour, doing nothing. I had to kill the process and start over. Now every time I try to install I get a lovely office info box telling me that I suck and to try it again. This time around it starts to copy a few files but thats about it nowhere near the progress I got before. I think that Office sees some of the files or Reg keys and has a fit. I have tried removing the programs from wine, but they wont go away. It looks like I am going to have to reinstall wine and start again.

Hi. Where should I locate this *.msc file in order to run from Terminal. Now it is located on Desktop and type msiexec but it doesnt work.

Thanks in advance

55. Waldir - June 22, 2008

Hey, thanks for the tutorial! Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to run “wine setup.exe” yet. I get the following error:

BTW, after following the instructions from http://www.encampeche.net/josephwood/2008/05/ubuntu-gnulinux/instalar-microsoft-office-2007-en-ubuntu-gnu-linux/ I’m getting a different kind of error:

Any ideas? Thanks a lot in advance!

I had to install samba in slackware to this tip work

58. Cipher - June 27, 2008

Thanks for the help. The only part that was not clear was:

Install msxml3.msi file from the Terminal window by issuing msiexec /i msxml3.msi

I couldnt find msiexec, so i just double clicked on the file and installed through wine. After that, the install work just fine.

59. SDR - June 28, 2008

After a few bumps managed to run wine setup.exe, and it started smoothly, but now it has about 20 minutes with the progress bar stucked in what i may guess a 60-70% of progress and on terminal, get this message, repeated over and over, and over again :

what does it means, it wont finish installing?

I didn’t have any problems with the Wine setup, but I found that MS Office crashed repeatedly during installation.

66. Vadarfone - July 22, 2008

Hey

I followed your advice and with a bit of luck, I managed to start the installer.

The problem is, it freezes on the install screen with the blue bar that goes across it.

It gets about 2/3rds of the way across and stalls.

This happens in Crossover too…

Any ideas?

67. Johann - August 4, 2008

Hi Vadarfone.
My one of my friends successfully installed Office.
He had the same ‘2/3’ stuck problem. The solution is, wait 20 minutes. It will finish the install, unfortunately the bar dosn’t work probably. Hope you’ll have the luck to install.

68. Oliver - August 12, 2008

I’m having the same progress-stuck-at-2/3s-alphablend-dibsection error. I’ll leave it overnight and post back in the morning. -pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeez- work….

running wine-1.1.0 on gentoo, in a clean wineprefix…

69. Oliver - August 12, 2008

I just realized, I never set it to “Vista” instead of “XP”… Anyway I’ll keep this thing running trying for XP, and if it doesn’t work by morning I’ll try changing the setting to Vista and see how that works. Anyway office 2007 should run on XP, but with wine, you can never be too careful…

70. Oliver - August 12, 2008

I let it run for about 2 hours before giving up – there had been no cpu activity the whole time anyway. Then I tried following the instructions on this page:
http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=4992&iTestingId=27927
(except that I copied that rcp-whatever file from a trial installation of crossover, because I don’t like downloading dll’s from random sites)
I’m in a similar spot now, but I get a few other messages thrown in fairly often, and my cpu usage is at 100% so i’m hopeful. I’ll let you know in the morning.

71. Oliver - August 12, 2008

Installed successfully. However:
Publisher displays some garbage in the console, but doesn’t crash: the console is still ‘tied up’. However, nothing opens, either.
Word crashes immediately after showering my console with information. There was a reference to “32-bit”, so maybe it’s because i’m in a 64-bit environment?
Excel crashes immediately with a windows “Microsoft Office Excel has encountered a problem and needs to close” dialog wanting to send an error report.
Powerpoint shows a splashimage, and then fails like excel.

Anyone else getting this?

72. Oliver - August 12, 2008

To whoever’s moderating these comments – please remove my previous one. Everything works beautifully – I just forgot to set it to XP in wineconfig again after I was done 🙂

I’ve followed all the steps, Office 2007 starts regularly, but it stops after approx 50% of the progress.
Any suggestion?

I forgot to say that starts the office 2007 installation, and ii stops after approx 50%…

This is an excellent idea, I’m just having a little trouble getting the setup.exe to run. Any help would be appreciated.

Running:

Ubuntu 8.04
Wine 1.0
Office 2007 Enterprise

I have had no problem with steps 1-10. However, I have been getting a msiapicallfailure message immediately after running “wine setup.exe”. That is to say, the setup runs for less than a second, then says “Setup did not complete successfully. We are sorry for the inconvenience.” The error report contains the msiapicallfailure code.

I’ve tried using both the rpcrt4.dll’s provided. As I said, any help would be much obliged.

To all the Ubuntu users trying to get this to work: Ubuntu has Wine 1.0.0 in it’s repositories at the moment. By downloading the latest Wine you can install Office 2007 with default settings (You don’t have to mess with the dll:s).

Step 1
Download the latest Wine as described here.

Step 2
Install Office 2007 with Wine (Don’t mess with the dll:s).

Step 3
If you want to use Powerpoint, then you have to set riched20.dll to native-then-builtin (Messing with the dll:s 🙂 as described here. You don’t have to download anything, just set the dll to native-then-builtin.

Step 4
Use.

This worked for me.

Got Wine 1.1.4 installed just fine, got Office 07 Pro installed just fine, got the msxml3.dll and rpcrt4.dll installed just fine (also set them to Native), set Wine to XP.

Loading MS Excel:
-XP emulation: Loads but the splash never goes away, persistent across all windows/desktops.
-Vista emulation: see “starting Excel” dialog, then get an error that Excel didn’t load, asks to send report to MS.

Loading MS Word:
-XP emulation; see the “Starting Word” dialog, then a splash, then nothing.
-Vista emulation; see the “Starting Word” dialog but nothing else.

Loading MS Outlook
-XP emulation; “cannot start Outlook”
-Vista emulation; see “Starting Outlook” dialog, then get an error that Excel didn’t load, asks to send report to MS.

It’s a lot easier just to install VMware for linux (free) then install winxp and run it while you are running linux. I only do this for few programs that I use in which there are no linux alternatives.

Why use ms office 2007 when open office is just as productive and has better with its pdf integration? – oh and it’s free.

Unless you are running obscure formulas open office will do most everything that the TYPICAL user will need. It even opens ms docs with no problem.
